Polycarbonate vs Fiberglass vs Carbon Fiber Helmets
A helmet's shell material is the biggest driver of its weight and a big chunk of its price. Here's what polycarbonate, fiberglass composite and carbon fiber actually mean for what you pay and how the helmet feels — without the marketing.

When a helmet listing says “advanced polycarbonate” or “AIM+ composite” or “full carbon,” it’s telling you what the outer shell is made of — and that one fact explains a lot about the helmet’s weight, price and feel. It does not, however, tell you how safe the helmet is; that’s the job of the certification. Here’s what each of the three common shell materials actually means for you as a buyer.
The three materials, from cheapest to priciest
Polycarbonateis a tough thermoplastic that’s injection-molded into a shell. It’s the cheapest to manufacture, which is why it dominates budget helmets, and it’s genuinely strong — a polycarbonate helmet can carry a top-tier Snell or ECE 22.06 rating. Its downside is weight: it’s the heaviest of the three, so a polycarbonate lid is more tiring on a long day. Many of our budget picksuse it, and that’s a smart trade: the maker spends the budget on certification and features and accepts the extra grams.
Fiberglass compositeis the middle ground and where most premium helmets live. Makers weave fiberglass with organic and high-performance fibers — Shoei calls its version AIM and AIM+, HJC calls its PIM and PIM+ — and hand-lay it into a shell that’s lighter and stiffer than polycarbonate for a given strength. Composite shells are more expensive to build, and they often come in multiple shell sizes so the fit stays true across the range. This is the material behind benchmarks like the Shoei RF-1400 and the touring Neotec 3.
Carbon fiberis the lightest and most expensive. It offers the best stiffness-to-weight ratio of the three, so carbon helmets are the featherweights — the carbon-aramid AGV K6 S at a published 1,255 g and the full-carbon Klim Krios Proat 1,450 g are the lightest lids we cover. You pay a premium for that, and for the material’s high-end feel. Some helmets, like the HJC RPHA 11 Pro, blend carbon into a composite to get much of the weight benefit at a lower price.
What the material does and doesn’t decide
It decides weight and price.Carbon is lightest and dearest, polycarbonate is heaviest and cheapest, composite sits between. If you want a light helmet, you’re shopping for a composite or carbon shell, and paying for it — see the lightest-helmets ranking for the order. It does not decide safety. All three materials can pass the same certification tests, and a well-certified polycarbonate helmet protects as well as a carbon one. Protection comes from the certification and, above all, the fit. Don’t let a “carbon” badge talk you into a helmet that fits worse than a composite one.
So which should you buy?
Buy on the whole helmet, not the shell name. If you’re on a budget, a certified polycarbonate helmet is excellent value — accept the weight, spend on a good fit and earplugs. If you ride long distances and want less fatigue, a composite shell is the sweet spot of weight, refinement and price for most riders. If low weight is a priorityand the budget allows — touring, ADV, all-day riding — carbon delivers the least mass on your neck, at a premium. In every case, get the certification and fit right first; the shell material is the tie-breaker, not the decision.

Is a carbon fiber helmet safer than a polycarbonate one?
Not inherently. A helmet's protection is decided by its certification (DOT, ECE 22.06, Snell) and its fit, not by the shell material's name. A well-certified polycarbonate helmet and a well-certified carbon helmet both have to pass the same tests. Carbon's advantage is weight and stiffness for a given strength, which is a comfort and quality benefit — not automatically a safety one.
Why are fiberglass composite helmets more expensive than polycarbonate?
Composite shells (fiberglass blended with organic and other fibers, like Shoei's AIM or HJC's PIM) are hand-laid and lighter and stiffer than injection-molded polycarbonate, which costs more to make. You're paying for lower weight, a more refined feel and often a multi-shell-size range that keeps the fit true. Polycarbonate is cheaper because it's mass-produced by injection molding.
Is a carbon fiber helmet worth the extra money?
For riders who value the lowest weight — tourers, long-distance commuters, adventure riders carrying a peak — carbon can be worth it, because less mass means less neck fatigue over a long day. But a good composite helmet gets you most of the way for much less, and a polycarbonate helmet protects just as well when properly certified. Carbon is a premium comfort upgrade, not a safety necessity.
What shell material do budget helmets use?
Almost always polycarbonate (sometimes branded as an 'advanced polycarbonate' or a polymer alloy). It's injection-molded, tough and cheap, which is why budget helmets can carry strong certifications like Snell or ECE 22.06 at a low price — the maker spends on the certification and accepts the extra weight of polycarbonate. The trade-off is that these helmets are heavier than composite or carbon lids.
