Arai and Shoei are the two names that end most premium helmet searches, and the reason the comparison is hard is that neither one is worse. Both are hand-built in Japan. Both use hand-laid composite shells rather than injected polycarbonate. Both carry a current Snell rating on their street helmets. Both carry the same warranty terms in the US. The spec sheets converge almost everywhere the marketing says they should diverge.
So this page ignores the badge argument and compares them on six things that are actually published and actually different: fit and head shape, shell construction, certification coverage, what each lineup covers, price of entry, and warranty and serviceability. How we’re comparing them
A brand comparison is easy to fake and hard to do honestly, because “which brand is better” is not a question a spec sheet answers. What a spec sheet does answer is which brand covers your specific requirement. So the criteria below are ordered by how often each one actually settles the decision for a real buyer:
- Head shape. The only factor that can make a $900 helmet worse than a $200 one. Ranked first because it eliminates a brand outright for some riders.
- Lineup coverage.If you need a helmet type one brand doesn’t build, nothing else matters.
- Certification. DOT is the legal floor; Snell and ECE 22.06 are what separates the two ranges.
- Shell construction and weight. Published materials and published grams, not adjectives.
- Price of entry. What the cheapest credible way into each brand actually costs.
- Warranty and serviceability. How long the maker stands behind it and how tunable the fit is after purchase.
Every figure below is read from the manufacturer’s own site or a major retailer listing, dated on the product cards. Where a maker doesn’t publish something, we say so instead of filling the gap — that’s the whole method, and it’s written out on our how we review page.
Fit: three shapes vs more shell sizes
This is the difference that matters most and gets discussed least accurately. The common claim is “Arai fits round heads.” What Arai actually publishes is more useful: three distinct interior shapes across the lineup. Round Oval is found in the Quantum-X. Long Oval is found in the Signet-X. Intermediate Oval— the most common Western head shape — is what Arai says most of its models use, including the Contour-X and the XD-5. Arai also notes that a Quantum-X can be converted to intermediate oval by installing the head liner from a Signet-X or Corsair-X, which tells you how deliberately the shapes are engineered rather than marketed.
Shoei attacks the same problem from the other end. It publishes no head-shape categories at all; instead it offers what it calls an industry-leading number of shell sizes, plus fully removable, adjustable and replaceable liners and cheek pads in multiple thicknesses. Every Shoei we cover — the RF-1400, X-Fifteen, Neotec 3 and Hornet X2 — is listed as intermediate oval. The bet is that a shell that scales properly with your head, tuned with pads, fits nearly everyone well.
Practically: if you are an intermediate oval, both brands will fit you and this criterion is a tie. If your head is noticeably round front-to-back, or noticeably long and narrow, Arai is the brand that builds a helmet shaped like your headand Shoei is the brand that asks you to pad around it. Lineup coverage: the modular gap
Reading Arai’s US site on August 23, 2026, the published lineup is street full-face (Corsair-X RC, Corsair-X, Contour-X, Signet-X, Quantum-X, Regent-X), dual-sport (XD-5), street open-face (RAM-X, Classic-V) and off-road (VX-Pro4). There is no flip-up modular in it.Shoei publishes two — the Neotec 3 and the Neotec II — alongside its full-face, open-face and adventure models.
That single gap decides the brand for a large group of riders. Flipping the chin bar up at a gas stop, at a border crossing, or to talk to someone without deafening them is the most-cited reason touring riders move to a modular in the first place. If that’s you, the comparison is over: Shoei is the only one of the two that sells you the helmet you want. Certification: same floor, different ceilings
Both brands clear DOT (FMVSS 218), the US legal minimum, on every street helmet. Above that, the two ranges diverge in an interesting way.

Head to head at the same job, it’s a tie: the Contour-X and the RF-1400 both carry DOT plus Snell M2025, and neither states ECE 22.06 on its US listing. Across the whole range, Shoei reaches further— it is the only one of the two with models publishing ECE 22.06, the revision that added rotational and oblique-impact testing to the European standard. Arai’s published answer to rotational energy is structural rather than certified: it calls the approach M.O.R.E. (Mitigation of Rotational Energy) and builds it into the shell shape rather than adding a slip liner or a 22.06 label.
Neither of those is automatically “safer for you.” More certifications means a shell has been vetted against more protocols, which is worth knowing and is not the same as a guarantee. Shell construction: R75 vs the wind tunnel
Both brands hand-lay composite shells, and both will tell you at length why. The philosophies genuinely differ.
Arai’s rule is geometric.Every shell carries what Arai calls R75: a continuous curve radius of at least 75mm across the shell, on the reasoning that a rounder, smoother shell glances off an impact instead of catching on it. The rule has visible consequences. Arai will not drill forehead vents through the impact area, so the Contour-X’s brow vents live in the shieldinstead. There are no deep scoops or shell-mounted spoilers. It is why an Arai looks plainer than its rivals, and the plainness is the engineering. The shells themselves use Arai’s Super Fiber, which Arai describes as about 30 percent stronger than conventional fiberglass and six times more expensive than similar fibers, hand-molded by a small group of in-house certified shell experts who serve a two-year apprenticeship first.
Shoei’s rule is aerodynamic.Its AIM and AIM+ shells are a multi-ply matrix of hand-laid interwoven fiberglass and organic fibers, designed to spread an impact over the largest possible area before the EPS liner takes it. Shell shape is then developed in Shoei’s own wind tunnel throughout each model’s development, with published results: Shoei cites a 6% reduction in lift and 4% reduction in drag for the RF-1400 against the RF-1200 it replaced. Shoei says over 50 people touch each helmet and each shell technician marks their own work.
On the scale, the numbers are close and the Arai wins the direct match-up. The Contour-X is a published 3.34 lb (about 1,515 g); the RF-1400 is a published 3.64 lb (about 1,651 g)— roughly 136 g, or a third of a pound, in the Arai’s favor. Neither maker states which size was weighed, so treat both as indicative rather than exact. Price of entry
This is where the brands stop being interchangeable. Arai’s US street lineup starts in the upper-premium bracket and goes up from there; there is no budget or mid-tier Arai. Shoei’s range is also premium, but its benchmark full-face consistently sells well below the equivalent Arai — often by several hundred dollars for the same DOT-plus-Snell-M2025 certification stack. Two honest consequences. First, if your budget is fixed, the Shoei route usually leaves enough over for a decent intercom or a proper pair of gloves, which will improve your riding more than the last 5% of helmet. Second, if neither brand fits your budget at all, that is not a safety problem — DOT and ECE-certified helmets exist far below this price. Warranty and serviceability: a genuine tie
Both brands publish the same US warranty terms: coverage for five years from the date of purchase or seven years from the date of manufacture, whichever comes first, against defects in materials and workmanship. Neither covers crash damage, misuse or improper storage — nor should you want it to, because a helmet that has taken an impact is finished regardless of what the paperwork says. Serviceability is also close. Both sell replacement shields, liners and cheek pads, and both build in an emergency cheek-pad release for first responders — Arai calls it the Emergency Release System, Shoei calls it E.Q.R.S. Arai’s fit tuning is slightly more self-service by design: it publishes peel-away temple and cheek-pad layers so you can customize the fit without buying extra parts, on top of optional thicker and thinner padding. Shoei tunes the same way but expects you to buy the pad thickness you need.

The verdict
Buy Shoei if you are an intermediate oval and want the most helmet for the money, if you want a flip-up, if you want ECE 22.06, or if you want a clean factory comms install. That covers most riders, which is why the RF-1400 is our default premium recommendation and heads our full-face roundup. It is not the more interesting helmet; it is the one that is hardest to regret.
Buy Araiif your head is genuinely round or genuinely long — in which case Arai builds a shape for you and Shoei does not — or if you’ve tried both and the Arai simply fits better, which happens often enough to be worth a fitting session. The Contour-X is the one to start with: same DOT and Snell M2025 as the RF-1400, roughly a third of a pound lighter, four shell sizes, a Pinlock insert in the box, and brow vents in the shield instead of holes in the shell. You will pay a clear premium for it, and Arai is unusually open about where that money goes.
What we won’t tell you is that either brand is meaningfully safer than the other, because nothing we can verify supports that. Both clear DOT, both hit a current Snell or ECE 22.06 protocol depending on the model, both are hand-built, and both carry identical warranties.
