If you have narrowed a premium adventure helmet down to two, it is almost always these two. Arai and Shoei build the category’s pavement-leaning benchmarks, both use hand-laid fiberglass composite rather than carbon, both carry a current Snell rating, and both are convertible — peak off and shield on for the highway, peak on and goggles for the trail. That shared ground is why the comparison is genuinely close, and it is why the differences that remain matter more than they normally would. Weight: the Arai’s edge, and why it counts double

Arai publishes 1,683 g; Shoei publishes 1,810 g. A 127 g gap sounds modest, and on a road helmet it would be. On an adventure helmet it counts for more than the number suggests, because an ADV lid carries a peak — a wing sitting forward of and above your head, adding leverage as well as mass. Every gram forward of the neck is felt as torque when you turn your head at speed, and the combined effect over a long transit is what makes the difference between arriving fresh and arriving with a stiff neck.

Context is worth having: neither of these is a lightweight by 2026 standards. The carbon Klim Krios Prois a published 1,450 g, which is a bigger step down from the Arai than the Arai is from the Shoei. Shell construction: four shell sizes vs a rounder shape

This is the most interesting difference and the one the spec table understates. Shoei builds the Hornet X2 in four shell sizes. That means an XS and a 2XL are not the same shell with different liner thickness — the shell itself scales, so a small head gets a genuinely smaller, lighter, better-proportioned helmet rather than a large one padded out. Fewer shell sizes is the single most common corner cut in helmet manufacturing, and Shoei declining to take it is a real engineering commitment.

Arai’s answer is its Super Fiber PB-cLcshell and the brand’s round-shell philosophy: a smoother, more continuous outer surface designed to glance off an impact rather than catch on it, with no deliberate flat spots or scoops in the shell profile. It is why an Arai looks slightly plainer than its rivals and why the brand resists shell-mounted gadgetry. The peak: wind-tunnel work vs convertibility

Every adventure helmet has the same problem: a peak is essential in the dirt (sun, roost, branches) and a liability at 75 mph, where it generates lift and buffeting. Shoei attacks it directly with the V-460 peak, developed in its own wind tunnel and shaped with vents through it to bleed pressure and reduce lift at highway speed. If your riding is long pavement transits between dirt sections, that is engineering aimed squarely at you.

Arai’s approach is configurability: the XD-5 is designed to run peak plus goggles, peak plus shield, or shield only with the peak removed, changed over without tools. Rather than optimizing one compromise, it lets you pick the right configuration for the day. Both approaches work; which is better depends on whether you would actually stop and reconfigure, or whether you would leave it as it is and want the peak to behave.

Shields and fogging

Arai’s VAS-A system is tool-less and ships with a Pinlock insert included— a meaningful detail, because fogging is the main visibility failure in adventure riding, where you are often slow, working hard and breathing heavily in cold air. Shoei’s CNS-2shield is Pinlock-ready and excellent, but whether the insert is in the box varies by market and SKU, so check the listing. Neither helmet has a drop-down internal sun visor — the premium convention is a tinted shield instead, and on an ADV lid the peak does part of that job anyway. Certification: two flavors of Snell

The XD-5 carries Snell M2025; the Hornet X2 carries Snell M2025D. The D suffix denotes the dirt-oriented variant of the standard, reflecting how off-road helmets are constructed and used. Both sit on top of DOT, and neither publishes ECE 22.06 on its US listing — which is the honest limitation of both: you are getting Snell’s high-impact-energy protocol rather than 22.06’s oblique rotational testing. Fit and head shape

Both are intermediate oval, the most common Western head shape, and both run XS to 2XL. In practice Arai has a reputation for a slightly rounder interior and Shoei for a slightly longer one, but that is rider consensus rather than published specification, so treat it as a reason to try both rather than a fact to buy on. The verdict

Buy the Arai XD-5 if you want the lighter, newer helmet with the better shield package: 127 g less on your neck, a Pinlock in the box, and three peak and shield configurations you can change without tools. It is the one we would take for mixed riding. Buy the Shoei Hornet X2if you mostly ride pavement to get to the dirt, and especially if you take a small or large size — four shell sizes means the helmet is built for your head rather than padded to it, and the wind-tunnel V-460 peak is the better-behaved one at highway speed. They are extremely close, and both are excellent. The Arai XD-5 is the lighter and newer design at a published 1,683 g against the Shoei's 1,810 g, and its VAS-A shield system ships with a Pinlock insert included. The Shoei Hornet X2 answers with four shell sizes — so the shell scales with your head rather than only the liner — and a V-460 peak developed in Shoei's wind tunnel specifically to reduce lift at highway speed. On the Shoei, the CNS-2 shield is Pinlock-ready and the insert may or may not be in the box depending on the market and the specific SKU, so check before you buy. Fogging is the main visibility failure in adventure riding, where you are frequently slow, working hard and breathing hard.

Can you take the peak off either helmet?

Yes. Both are designed as convertible adventure helmets — peak off and shield on for highway miles, peak on and goggles for dirt. The Arai XD-5 is explicitly built around this, with a convertible peak, shield and goggle configuration as a core design feature. The Shoei's V-460 peak also removes. Taking the peak off is the single biggest thing you can do to cut wind noise and neck strain on a long highway transit in either helmet.

Which certification do they carry?

Both carry DOT plus a current Snell rating: the Arai XD-5 is Snell M2025 and the Shoei Hornet X2 is Snell M2025D. Neither publishes ECE 22.06 on its US listing. That makes them the two most heavily Snell-certified adventure helmets we rank, and it is the shared trait that puts them in the same conversation.
