How to choose a full-face helmet

Certification is the floor, not the whole story.Every helmet here meets DOT, the US legal minimum. The differences show up above that line: ECE 22.06 adds independently-verified rotational and multi-point impact testing, and Snell M2025 is a stricter protocol on top. Then fit, which beats brand every time.A poorly-fitting flagship protects worse than a well-fitting budget helmet. Most of these run intermediate-oval, the most common Western head shape, but confirm yours before you buy—our sizing guide shows you how to measure and read head shape.

Weight and features are the tiebreakers.A composite or carbon shell (the RF-1400, K6 S, RPHA 11) shaves grams that you feel after a few hours; a drop-down sun visor (the LS2 Stream II) saves swapping shields; a Pinlock-ready shield kills fogging. Are more expensive full-face helmets actually safer?

Not necessarily. The safety floor is the certification, and a budget helmet meeting DOT plus ECE 22.06 or Snell has passed the same tests as a flagship. Premium money mostly buys lower weight, less wind noise, better ventilation and nicer materials — real benefits, but not protection you can't get for less. What's the difference between DOT, ECE 22.06 and Snell?

DOT (FMVSS 218) is the US legal minimum and is largely self-certified by the manufacturer. ECE 22.06 is the current European standard, independently tested, and its 2022 revision added rotational and multi-point impact testing. Snell M2025 is a stricter, independent protocol the maker pays to have verified. How much should a full-face helmet weigh?

Most full-faces land between about 1,250 and 1,650 grams. Lighter is easier on your neck over a long ride: a carbon-aramid helmet like the AGV K6 S is around 1,255 g published, while a polycarbonate budget lid can be 1,600 g or more. Where a maker doesn't state the weight or the test size, we mark it 'Not published' rather than guess.

Do I need a full-face helmet with a sun visor?

It's a genuine convenience — a drop-down internal sun visor means you don't have to carry or swap to a tinted shield. Most premium full-faces here skip it (Shoei's design choice is to swap shields instead), while the budget LS2 Stream II includes one. If you ride into low sun often, it's worth prioritizing.

Is a full-face helmet quieter than a modular?
