How to choose an intercom

Mesh or Bluetooth is the first and biggest decision.If you ride in groups of three or more, buy mesh (the Cardo Packtalk Edge or Neo, or the Sena 50S). Mesh keeps everyone connected and heals itself when a rider drops out and comes back—no manual re-pairing. If you only ever ride solo or with one passenger, a good Bluetooth unit like the Sena 5S does everything you need for far less money.

Match the brand to your group. Cross-brand mesh (Cardo talking to Sena) falls back to more limited universal Bluetooth, so if your riding buddies already run one brand, buying the same brand gives you the best experience. Cardo leads on its magnetic Air Mount and DMC mesh; Sena counters with Harman Kardon audio and a longer headline range.

Check battery against your longest day.Talk time is the spec that decides whether a unit survives a full touring day without a charge. The units here range from about 13 to 18 hours—fine for a day, but on multi-day trips you’ll want to top up overnight. And read the live price carefully: the previous-generation Sena 30K is only worth it when it’s actually cheaper than the current 50S, which isn’t always the case.

What's the difference between mesh and Bluetooth intercoms?

Bluetooth chains riders together one to the next, which is simple and cheap but fragile in groups — if a rider in the middle drops out, everyone downstream loses the connection. Mesh connects every rider to every other rider and heals itself automatically when someone drops out and returns, so it's far more reliable for groups of three or more. Can Cardo and Sena intercoms talk to each other?

Yes, but with limits. The two brands' proprietary mesh networks don't interoperate, so a mixed group falls back to a more basic universal Bluetooth connection, which is less robust than either brand's native mesh. If your group rides together often, everyone buying the same brand gives the best experience.

How much intercom range do you really need?

Advertised ranges (one mile, five miles) are best-case, line-of-sight figures in open terrain — real range through traffic, hills or forest is a fraction of that. For most group riding, what matters more is that mesh reconnects automatically when riders drift out and back, which the mesh units here all do. Treat the headline range as a ceiling, not a promise.

Do I need a special helmet for an intercom?
