SHARP Helmet Ratings Explained

Every helmet certification is pass/fail — which means none of them tells you whether one certified helmet outperforms another. SHARP is the one public program that does, and it is both more useful and more limited than riders assume.

There is a gap at the center of helmet safety information, and most riders never notice it. Every helmet certification is pass/fail.DOT, ECE 22.06 and Snell all set a bar and tell you whether a helmet cleared it — none of them tells you whether it cleared it comfortably or by a hair, and none ranks one certified helmet against another. Two helmets that both say “ECE 22.06” on the strap could be meaningfully different in a crash, and the label cannot tell them apart.

SHARPexists to fill that gap. It is the UK Department for Transport’s Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme, and it is the only public body anywhere that crash-tests already-certified helmets and publishes a comparative score. That makes it genuinely valuable and genuinely limited, and both halves matter.

What SHARP is, and what it is not

SHARP is not a certification. It has no legal force, no manufacturer applies for it, and a helmet does not need it to be sold. Every helmet SHARP tests has already passed ECE, because in the UK it could not be on sale otherwise. SHARP starts where certification stops.

The output is a one-to-five-star ratingfor a specific helmet model, published free on SHARP’s own website alongside details of how that model performed. There is no fee to manufacturers and no commercial relationship — it is a government road-safety program, funded as such.

The single most important methodological point: SHARP buys the helmets anonymously from ordinary retailers. It does not accept samples supplied by manufacturers. That removes the obvious failure mode of a maker sending a hand-finished example, and it is the reason SHARP results carry weight that a manufacturer-submitted test would not.

How the testing works

SHARP’s protocol is more demanding than the certification it sits on top of, in three specific ways.

More impact points.Certification tests a defined set of locations. SHARP strikes the helmet at multiple points around the shell, which surfaces inconsistency — a helmet can be strong at the crown and weaker at the side, and a single-point test would never show it.

Multiple speeds and anvil shapes. Impacts are run at more than one velocity, onto both a flat anvil and a curb-shaped one. Real crashes involve curbs, posts and edges as often as flat road, and a shell that spreads a flat impact well can behave differently against an edge.

Oblique impacts. SHARP assesses angled impacts that generate rotational forces on the head, not just linear ones. This is the mechanism implicated in a large share of serious brain injury, and SHARP was assessing it years before ECE 22.06 brought oblique testing into mainstream regulation. It is also the problem MIPS is designed to address.

SHARP also checks the retention system— the strap and buckle that keep the helmet on your head, which is worth nothing if it fails — and for flip-front helmets it assesses whether the chin bar stays locked during an impact, publishing that separately. Reading the stars honestly

A five-star SHARP helmet performed well across that battery of tests. A three-star helmet performed adequately. A one-star helmet passed ECE — it is legal and it is a helmet — but performed poorly relative to its peers. That relative framing is the whole value: it is the only public number that lets you compare two legal helmets.

What the stars are not is a prediction about your crash. SHARP is testing a headform in a laboratory at chosen speeds and angles. Your crash will not be any of those. The rating is evidence about how well a helmet manages energy in general, not a forecast, and SHARP is careful about this in its own materials in a way that people quoting SHARP often are not.

The fair criticisms

SHARP has serious critics, manufacturers among them, and dismissing that as sour grapes would be lazy. Three criticisms are worth taking seriously.

Aggregation hides detail.Collapsing many impact results into a single star count can mask a helmet that is excellent nearly everywhere and weak at one point, and it can flatter a helmet that is uniformly mediocre. SHARP publishes the underlying detail per model, which is the mitigation — but almost nobody reads past the star count.

The speed weighting is contested. Critics argue that emphasizing lower-speed impacts rewards softer EPS foam, which crushes readily at low energy but may bottom out sooner in a severe crash. A helmet optimized for the test regime is not necessarily optimized for the worst day of your life. This is a genuine engineering disagreement rather than a manufacturer complaint, and it has no settled answer.

One size, one market.SHARP tests a specific size of each model. Shell size, shell count and EPS density vary across a size run, and a helmet built in four shell sizes behaves differently at XS than a helmet built in two. And the helmets are UK-market examples — which brings us to the point that matters most on this site.

What SHARP means for a US rider

Two limitations apply, and both are real.

Coverage.SHARP only tests helmets sold in the UK. A very large number of helmets on the American market have never been near it — not because they are poor, but because they are not sold in Britain. A missing SHARP rating is an absence of evidence, not evidence of absence, and treating it as a black mark would eliminate good helmets for no reason.

Market differences.Where a model does appear in both markets, the US version can differ. UK helmets must carry ECE; US helmets must carry DOT and may target Snell. A shell and EPS engineered to pass Snell’s higher-energy protocol is designed differently from one engineered around ECE’s oblique testing, and a shared nameplate does not guarantee a shared build. The practical rule: use SHARP as a tiebreaker, not as a shortlist. Narrow your choice on certification, fit and the kind of riding you do, then check whether a SHARP score exists for what is left. If two otherwise-equal helmets have different star counts, that is useful. If one is unrated, that tells you nothing.

How this sits alongside our own ranking

We are in the same position as every other publisher without a crash lab, and we say so plainly: we do not test helmets, and we will not publish a safety score we did not measure. It is explicitly a “most thoroughly certified” ranking, not a “most protective” one, and the difference is exactly the gap SHARP was created to address.

So the honest hierarchy for a rider is this. Fit first— a correctly-sized helmet outperforms a loose one of any rating, every time, and that is not a close call. Certification second: DOT plus ECE 22.06, or DOT plus Snell, or ideally both. SHARP third, where it exists, to break a tie. And then age, because a five-star helmet made nine years ago is not the helmet SHARP tested — check how old yours is and when to replace it.
