Schuberth Helmets: Lineup and Best Models

Schuberth optimizes for the two things you notice on hour six, not hour one: how loud the helmet is and how cleanly the intercom disappears into it. Here's what that engineering buys, what it costs you in grams and dollars, and which of the three models fits which rider.

Every helmet brand has one sentence that explains it. Shoei’s is quiet refinement; Arai’s is shell shape; AGV’s is weight and sightlines; Scorpion’s is features per dollar. Schuberth’s is what the helmet is like on hour six— the noise reaching your ears, the air moving through it, and whether the intercom is part of the helmet or a lump stuck to the side of it. That is a narrow thesis, and Schuberth pursues it harder than anyone. It is also the reason the brand is expensive, heavy, and completely wrong for some riders.

The Schuberth approach: acoustics first, integration second

Read Schuberth’s own US data sheet for the C5 and the engineering priorities are stated outright: wind tunnel development for aerodynamic stability, a neck roll concept described as being for aeroacoustic performance, a back spoiler with an air extractor, and a headline claim of 85 dB(A) at 62 mph on a naked bike. Almost no other maker publishes a decibel figure at all. Most describe a helmet as “quiet” and move on.

Take that number seriously, but take it at exactly the value it has. No independent body verifies helmet noise. There is no Snell for decibels and no SHARP for wind roar. Schuberth’s figure comes from Schuberth’s wind tunnel, on an unspecified naked bike, at a speed of its choosing — and noise at your ears depends enormously on your screen, your riding position, your shoulders and your neck. What the claim honestly tells you is that Schuberth designed against noise as a measured target, which is more than most brands can demonstrate. It does not tell you the helmet will be quieter than a Shoei on your bike. The second pillar is integration, and this one is checkable on a spec sheet. In a Schuberth, the speakers, the microphone and three separate antennas — Mesh, FM radio and Bluetooth — are built into the shell at the factory. The comms unit itself is the only part you buy, and it drops into a recess rather than clamping to the outside of the helmet. If you have ever fought a clamp bracket between a shell and a cheek pad, or listened to a badly-placed speaker sitting an inch off your ear, you already understand what that is worth. Third, and quietly the best-value part of the package: a Pinlock 120 anti-fog lens comes preinstalled on the C5 and the S3. Most premium helmets are sold “Pinlock-ready,” which means the shield has the pins and you buy the insert. Schuberth fits it. On a touring helmet used in cold, wet weather, that is the single most effective anti-fog measure there is.

The certification question you need to understand before you buy

Here is the part a brand page owes you plainly. Every Schuberth sold in the United States that we could source states DOT FMVSS 218 and nothing above it. Schuberth’s own US data sheet for the C5 lists DOT homologation; RevZilla’s US listings for the S3 and E2 state DOT certification. Neither ECE 22.06 nor Snell appears on the American spec sheets — even though Schuberth’s European material describes the S3 as its first ECE 22.06 full-face and the E2 as carrying ECE-R 22.06 homologation. Certification is a per-market, per-version property, and we record what the page we read actually said. Where a maker does not publish something, our spec tables print “Not published” instead of guessing.

DOT is a real standard and a legal requirement, but it is the floor: it is self-certified by the manufacturer, with NHTSA spot-testing after the fact. ECE 22.06 and Snell both add independently-verified testing on top of it, and our certification rankingshows exactly how that hierarchy stacks up. So if your buying criterion is “the most thoroughly certified helmet my money can get,” a Schuberth is a poor answer at any price. If your criterion is a quiet, superbly integrated touring helmet that clears the legal bar, it is one of the best answers there is. Both of those are legitimate ways to buy a helmet. Pretending they are the same thing is not.

There is one certification detail where Schuberth is genuinely ahead, though. Both the C5 and the E2 publish P/J homologation— P for a protective chin bar, J for approval as an open-face jet helmet. A helmet marked P/J was assessed in both configurations and is approved to ride with the chin bar up as well as down. It sounds like a footnote until you notice how few makers state it: our modular-safety guide was written around the fact that the marking is usually absent from consumer-facing pages, so a rider genuinely cannot tell whether the flip-up they own is approved open. Schuberth tells you. That is a real, checkable answer to the most common worry about modular helmets.

The lineup, and where each model fits

Schuberth’s US road range is three helmets, and they divide cleanly by chin bar. We write up helmets only where we have specifications read from a dated manufacturer or retailer fetch, so this covers the models in our registry rather than reciting a catalog we have not sourced.

  • C5— the modular, and the one the brand is really about. P/J DOT homologation, a DFP fiberglass shell reinforced with basalt, a distortion-free class 1 visor with a Pinlock 120 already fitted, the V-lock drop-down sun visor, an A.R.O.S. anti-roll-off chin strap, a double chin intake with an exchangeable filter, and the full antenna set for the SC2 or SC EDGE. Two shell sizes cover eight head sizes, XXS (51 cm) to 3XL (65 cm). Schuberth’s published weights: 1,780 g in 51/53, 1,790 g in 55/57/59, and 1,900–1,910 g from 61 up.
  • S3— the sport-touring full-face, for riders who want the acoustics and the integration without a flip-up mechanism. DFP glass fiber reinforced with carbon fiber, a Pinlock 120 preinstalled, the same V-lock sun visor, a filtered double chin intake and a back spoiler with an air extractor. Two shell sizes, XS to 3XL (52–65 cm). Neither Schuberth’s US listing nor RevZilla publishes a weight for it, which is the one genuinely annoying gap in the range’s spec sheets.
  • E2— the modular adventure helmet. DFP fiberglass reinforced with carbon fiber, P/J double homologation, a peak that removes and adjusts through three positions with a memory function, the EasyChange tool-less visor mechanism, the V-lock sun visor and the same pre-installed speakers and antennas. XS to 3XL (52–65 cm), listed at 3.97 lb (about 1,801 g).

Where Schuberth wins, and where it does not

Wins. Nobody else in our registry ships a helmet with the antennas already in the shell, and nobody else fits the Pinlock insert for you. The size range is unusually generous — the C5 starts at a 51 cm XXS and runs to a 65 cm 3XL on only two shells, which covers heads that most premium ranges simply do not make, in both directions. Our big-heads ranking exists because that is rarer than it should be. And the published P/J homologation on the C5 and E2 answers a question most brands leave open.

Does not. Three honest limitations, and they are not small. First, weight: the C5’s 1,790 g mid-range figure is about 90 g heavier than the published number for a Shoei Neotec 3, and roughly 340 g heavier than a carbon Klim Krios Pro. Second, certification per dollar: you are paying flagship money for a DOT-only US spec sheet, which is a genuinely poor trade if certification is what you are shopping for. Third, cost of the ecosystem— the integration only pays off if you buy the branded comms unit, which is a separate purchase on top of an already expensive helmet. An HJC RPHA 91 gives you a composite touring modular with a sun visor for a fraction of the money, and it is honest to say so on a page about Schuberth.

Is a Schuberth right for you?

Buy one if you ride long days, ride them with an intercom running, and have decided that noise and integration are what you want your money to fix. That is a specific rider — the tourer, the commuter with a two-hour slab run, the couple who talk bike-to-bike all day — and for that rider the C5 is one of the most coherent products in motorcycling. Look elsewhere if you want the strictest certification your budget can buy, if you notice helmet weight, or if you are not going to run comms. And as with every brand page, the caveat that outranks all of the above: a brand being excellent does not mean its shell fits your head. All three Schuberths are intermediate oval. Schuberth C5

The touring modular that treats wind noise and comms as engineering problems rather than marketing. Schuberth S3

Schuberth's sport-touring full-face, and the German quiet-and-integration argument in its purest form: a carbon-reinforced DFP fiberglass shell, a Pinlock 120 already fitted to the clear shield, and speakers plus antennas laid into the shell so a comms unit plugs in rather than clamps on. What the US listing does not give you is a certification above DOT, or a published weight to rank it by.

Schuberth E2

A modular adventure helmet built the way Schuberth builds touring helmets: composite shell, drop-down sun visor, comms wiring already in the shell, and a peak that removes without tools so the same lid works on the highway. RevZilla's listing states P/J double homologation, which is the rarest thing on this spec sheet. The weight is the price you pay for a flip-up ADV helmet.

Are Schuberth helmets worth the money?

It depends entirely on what you are buying. If you want the strictest certification stack per dollar, no — a Snell M2025 helmet costs a fraction of a C5 and has been through a tougher published impact protocol. What Schuberth sells is the stuff a spec sheet undersells: aeroacoustic design work you can hear on a long day, a Pinlock 120 already fitted rather than sold separately, and speakers plus three antennas laid into the shell so an intercom plugs in instead of clamping on. If you ride long days with comms on, that is a real purchase. If you commute 20 minutes with headphones out, it is not.

What is the best Schuberth helmet?

For most riders looking at the brand, the C5. It is the model Schuberth's engineering thesis is built around: P/J DOT homologation, a Pinlock 120 preinstalled on a class 1 visor, a V-lock drop-down sun visor, the full Mesh/FM/Bluetooth antenna set built into the shell, and two shell sizes covering eight head sizes from 51 to 65 cm. Choose the S3 instead if you do not want a flip-up chin bar, or the E2 if you ride adventure and want a removable peak.

Are Schuberth helmets DOT approved?

Yes. Schuberth's own US data sheet for the C5 states DOT FMVSS No. 218 homologation, and RevZilla's US listings for the S3 and E2 state DOT certification. What the US listings do not claim is ECE 22.06 or Snell — those are absent from the American spec sheets even though Schuberth's European material describes ECE 22.06 homologation for the same model names. Certification varies by market version on any brand, so read the label inside the helmet you actually receive.

What does P/J homologation mean on a Schuberth?

P means the chin bar met the protective lower-face-cover impact requirements; J means the helmet is approved as a jet, or open-face, helmet. A helmet marked P/J was assessed in both configurations, so it is approved to ride with the chin bar up as well as down. Schuberth publishes P/J for the C5 and the E2, which is unusual — most makers simply do not state it, and a modular marked P alone is approved closed only. Are Schuberth helmets heavy?

Yes, and it is the honest cost of the design. Schuberth's own data sheet puts the C5 at 1,780 g in the smallest sizes, 1,790 g in the middle of the range and 1,900-1,910 g in the largest — roughly 90 to 210 g more than a Shoei Neotec 3's published figure. The E2 is listed at 3.97 lb, about 1,801 g. Composite shells, a flip mechanism, a sun visor and an antenna set all add mass. If low weight is your first priority, a carbon full-face is a better answer than any Schuberth.

Do Schuberth helmets work with Cardo or Sena?

Schuberth's C5 data sheet describes the helmets as pre-wired for a plug-and-play communication system powered by Cardo and Sena, and lists the C5 as suited to the SCHUBERTH SC2, SC2 Standard and SC EDGE units. That is the intended path: the speakers, microphone and the Mesh, FM and Bluetooth antennas are already inside the shell, and the branded unit drops into the recess. A generic clamp-on Cardo or Sena will physically mount to a Schuberth like any other helmet, but you give up the whole reason to buy one.
